If you'd like to take a long-distance route, then the Hexenstieg, also called the witch route, is one of the most famous. This trail of almost 100 kilometres has been open since 2003; it begins in Osterode in the west and ends in Thale in the east. This hike leads you along the Brocken, the highest mountain of the Harz.
