Walking and cycling

Landal Woodland Lakes is situated in a beautiful hilly landscape almost exactly between the North York Moors National Park and Yorkshire Dales National Park. It takes only 30 minutes by bike to reach these nature areas, where you can immerse yourself fully in fantastic hilly and wooded landscapes filled with typical English lakes. There are also plenty of nature trails and hills to explore within walking distance of the park in this paradise for hikers and cyclists.  

A day of cycling

Up the hill, down the hill, through the woods and past yet another lake... There’s lots to see and enjoy when exploring by bike. Head for one of the national parks in the area or bike through one or more of the numerous picturesque villages in the region. Take a break every so often to cast a fishing rod into one of the many lakes found here.

Head for Yorkshire

Put on your sports shoes, hop onto your two-wheeler and explore the lovely area of Yorkshire. From sea views to rolling hills; bustling city streets to fun forest trails, a ride for you is never far away. With both challenging and comfortable routes to follow, there’s a perfect route for everyone.

Routes, circuits and trails

Explore the park area along the mapped out routes provided by park reception. A few examples that are perfect on either two feet or two wheels:

  • Thirsk Sowerby Stroll – A route of around 5 km that takes you through the old market town of Thirsk (5 km from the park), with amazing views of the surroundings (suitable for all levels)
  • Kilburn Woods – A route of around 9 km that starts at the Sutton Bank North York Moors visitor centre (15 km from the park), takes you through unspoiled nature and along the steep cliffs of the lovely Kilburn Woods
  • Whitehorse Trail – A climb that is rewarded with fantastic views of the forested, hilly landscape all around
  • Byland Abbey & Mount Snever Observatory – Visit these abbey ruins (30 minutes by car from the park) and explore the unspoiled nature found throughout this region
  • Cleveland Way National Trail – Explore 175 kilometres of fantastic landscapes and nature
  • Dalby Forest – One of the best spots in Great Britain for off-road biking, with more than 70 km of trails to explore
  • Sutton Bank – A fun excursion with routes that are both family-friendly and picturesque, with the possibility to rent bikes

Exploring on foot

Both the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors offer landscapes rich in castles, abbeys, moors and small towns, each of which has maintained its historic charm. There is so much to discover and enjoy in the region, from the panoramic views at the ‘Hole of Horcum’ to picturesque walks in the countryside along Helmsley Castle or steeper climbs around Swainby and Cleveland Hills.
